Address:
95 Flinders Lane, Melbourne
Significance:
Built 1896 as warehouse/factory
operating as part of the ‘rag trade’, the interior was transformed
into Rosati’s restaurant, opening in December 1986. Victorian façade
remains as important part of low rise Flinders Lane precinct, and
the Postmodern interior decoration of mosaic, tiles, trompe l’oeil
walls and huge bar remain from when Rosati’s was a social and foodie
mecca.

Building to be replaced by 10
storey office block with ground level retail.

City of Melbourne.
Permit Date:
May 2011. Front 10 metres to be
salvaged but rest of building to be replaced. No mention of
preserving interiors.

What are the chances of
reversing the decision?
City of Melbourne should urgently ask
for an Interim Heritage Overlay. Note already identified in ‘gap
study’ as possibly worthy of listing.
