PALACE/METRO THEATRE

20-30 Bourke Street, Melbourne
Significance:
Built as theatre 1912, interior
remodelled 1916 and 1923 by theatre architect Harry White (who also
designed Palais, interior of Princess and Athenaeum). Though façade
is uninspired 50s version of Art Deco, the foyers, the balconies and
ceiling decoration remain after conversion to nightclub in 1980s.

For sale. Proposal to demolish for
high-rise apartments, despite 15m height limit to front half, 23m
for back half. Within Heritage Precinct but exterior low grade and
interiors not protected.

Minister for Planning if a large
scale project (over 25,000 square metres). Melbourne City Council if
not.

Need Melbourne City Council to
heritage list interior. Council currently about to list 12
interiors, but this far more urgent.
