Why are we running this competition?

Many interiors of buildings do not have any heritage protection and are vulnerable to destruction by new developments. Even where a building is not entirely demolished and the façade of the building is preserved, the interiors are often completely destroyed.

Myer Mural Hall

A recent example is the destruction of interiors at the Myer store in Bourke Street where the Mural Hall and façade were restored and the rest of the original art deco (and earlier) interior decorations and fittings were removed.

Other significant interiors that have no heritage protection include the Palace Theatre on Bourke Street, Le Louvre, and the 1922 Tattersalls Club bar, now home to Cookie in Curtin House.

MHA wants your help to compile a list of Melbourne’s best 'hidden' interiors so that they can be considered for heritage protection.

We are running a competition and the best photo of the most interesting or elusive interior will win a signed copy of 'Walking Melbourne' by Rohan Storey, Architectural Historian.

We want photos of your favourite hidden interiors. These might be an original lobby in the building where you work, a well preserved staircase in the apartment block where you live or decorative details you spotted in a shop or a bar.
